FIRST RATHA YATRA – JAMSHEDPUR 2016

Every year koda-thakuro (the black thakur, that is, Lord Jagannath) travels to his moushi’s home in the month of ashada (rainy season usually falling between June and July). So this involves moving Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshana on a chariot (a rath or rotho as it’s called in Odisha) to their gantavya-sthal – the destination. I went to Jamshedpur’s first such procession put together by ISKCON. And I towed my mother along. We had a great time pulling and pushing the chariots and having halwa and khichdi.
